Blanks guide

The best blanks for custom printing

The blank matters as much as the print. The right garment makes your design feel like product; the wrong one makes it feel like swag. Here’s how to choose, and which blanks we reach for most - you pick from thousands of real styles when you start designing.

How to choose a blank

Four things decide it: feel (soft-and-retail vs heavy-and-durable), fit (fitted vs boxy), price per blank, and the color range you need. A brand drop and a batch of giveaway tees call for very different garments - so start from the job, not the brand name.

Tees

  • Soft & retail: Bella+Canvas 3001 - the default when you want a modern, fitted, retail-feeling tee.
  • Heavyweight & garment-dyed: Comfort Colors 1717 - broken-in feel, rich pigment-dyed colors, a favorite for brands and merch shelves.
  • Budget & bulk: the Port & Company Easy Cotton Tee (PC43) is our most cost-effective tee - a clean, lightweight cotton shirt that’s the right call for big runs, giveaways, and events. Gildan is the other reliable budget workhorse.

Hoodies & crewnecks

Same logic scales up: lighter retail-fit fleece for a premium drop, heavier midweight fleece for durability and value. Independent Trading and AS Colour cover the premium end; Gildan covers budget and bulk. Hoodies carry the highest perceived value, so they’re worth spending up on for a brand piece.

Hats

For embroidery, cap structure changes the whole look: structured trucker and snapback styles hold a bold logo; unstructured “dad” caps sit lower and casual. Richardson is the workhorse line. See the custom embroidered hats guide for the full breakdown, or browse headwear.
